THE MOUNTAIN’S STORY
The Polar Bear leads the Boy above the trees to a scrape of shelter it has been keeping. Not a twist that undoes the month. A den. Inside: an old orange leaf, a child’s glove, a lantern from the lake. The Bear has been collecting October too, badly, the way animals and people do when they intend to come back. The Boy does not take any of it. He understands the leaf from day 2 well enough now.
