THE MOUNTAIN’S STORY
Everyone wakes beneath an enormous orange sunrise. The coach has already begun to empty into the base where people have been learning the mountain’s skis and snowboards, and October arrives together. The Boy stops first at Summit Supply, under a crest dressed for the month, and takes a sleeping bag, a survival cup, a compass, and enough food to leave again. Ridgepoint Pizza Co. is packed with travellers eating breakfast pizzas before the trails. Then, beyond the gate, a white shape stands among the orange trees. A Polar Bear. Nobody knows where it came from. It looks at the Boy, and turns toward the mountain.
