THE DISPATCH
Written from the mountain’s clock and from what you actually did. It is not a live model on every visit, and it will not invent a sold-out pizza just to look busy. Stories appear when the hour reaches them.
A lantern was lit early, then argued with, then left lit.
JUST NOW
Spider silk on a fest post, left where it was. The ribbon went around it.
THE DISPATCH
The light is going. Stripes are about to meet the fire. Snow stays on the far peaks. What has not happened yet is not written yet.
The last crates are food, not luggage. Garlic bread is ahead of anybody who wants it. This will not be performed as scarcity.
Condensation, or a joke, on the lodge glass. Esme writes it down and does not explain it. Harbor Z declines the metaphor.
Jumper ready is the sentence of the day. Stripes, not a onesie, unless someone means it. The fest is still a few hours off.
The piano refuses to follow. Rafi stands near it and does not correct anyone. That is the arrangement.
The Polar Bear is still there.
Snow is only on the distant peaks.
OVERHEARD
Owen. I’ve already got my jumper ready.
Esme. One glove is not a jumper. You’ll be cold and theatrical.
Nia. Skiing’s open. Snowboarding’s open. Don’t take the spare helmet.
Leo. I didn’t. It’s still a spare in theory only.
Hattie. Are you going tonight?
Nia. If I can walk the line without turning it into practice.
ON THE MOUNTAIN
Plans change through the day. A conversation sticks. The mountain does not wait for you to open a page.
He was going to the studio and followed breakfast pizza instead.
“One slice. Then the desk. I mean it.”
Earlier: Walking the zebra line once, then standing where the fire will be.
Watching one stubborn bulb. It comes on. She leaves it on.
“Who’s bringing the pumpkins? Not me. I brought the questions.”

Walking it. Stepping off. Starting again, not annoyed.
“Are you going tonight? I am, if the fire is actually lit.”
Earlier: Walking it. Stepping off. Starting again, not annoyed.
Black plate, white cheese, standing near the heat.
“I’ve already got my jumper ready. It’s under the coat.”
